Crystals + Skincare

Using crystals in self care, body care, and skin care therapies is not a new thing, although it has gained lots of attention recently. I use crystal stones in my facials for clients for both relaxation and skincare, because they bring so much extra benefit! Think about it for a moment. In physics, we learn that everything is made up of matter, which in turn is made up of energy. Different objects (or creatures or people) have different levels of energy intensity or frequency. Depending on the specific frequency of a thing, it can support or prevent health and wellness. For example:  positive thoughts, meditation, essential oils, plants, vegetables and fruits, and crystals all have high frequencies. When you use, eat or surround yourself with these things, it helps raise the frequency of your collective energy. The higher the frequency, the higher the health. Negative thoughts or emotions, plastics, toxic chemicals, microwaved foods, electronics and drugs all have lower frequencies, and thus can lower yours when you hang around them too long.

So why do crystals have high energy frequencies?

Crystals are stones from deep within the earth that form when certain minerals come into contact with high amounts of pressure and gasses. For example, crystals form when liquid rock (magma) deep within the earth starts to cool. Others form with volcanic eruption. They literally hold within them the vibration of the earth. These crystals have very high energy frequencies and also the ability to absorb and transmute energy, due to their structure and origin story. We are more part of our Earth than most of us realize. We sync with the tides, the rise and setting of the sun and moon, the seasons and the earth’s many movements. Using crystals on and around our physical bodies can help with everything from relaxation and release to balancing and detox. Many crystals are harvested and then smoothed and shaped into smaller sizes, but the larger, raw crystals can also be extremely powerful.

I have many crystals in my treatment room: large pieces of Amethyst and Quartz, as well as some Himalayan Salt and Selenite. Smaller polished crystal gua sha, wands and stones are my favorites for using topically during facial massage to encourage healthy circulation. Finally, I have a collection of stones all palm sized and smaller that I will sometimes place on a client during his or her facial to relax them further throughout the treatment.

Here’s how i like to use crystals in my hoe and in my skincare practice:

Massage

One of my very favorite aspects of skincare is massage therapy – especially pressure point and lymph massage. It aids in overall circulation and detox for a more radiant and clear complexion. Using Gua Sha stones made from jade and pearl and rose quartz help soothe the skin as I massage, allowing for better results in lymph movement. I’ve also used gentle jade rollers for inflamed skin or gentle movements under the eyes. The healing energy from the crystals helps to calm skin irritation and inflammation. I also like to place certain stones on my clients chakra points or have them hols one or two, depending on what calls to them or me at the time of their appointment.

Grounding + Clearing Energy

So, so important when working with clients! I cleanse the energy of my treatment room and table between each client. So much of what I do involved releasing stress from the mind and body – and all that energy needs to be cleared from the room before another client enters. Not to mention, cleansing this energy is pretty important for me as I’m in it all day long! I take a large Selenite wand and move it back and forth over the treatment table, and I burn palo santo as well. I also have a large collection of crystals near my treatment table (amethyst, quartz, fluorite etc) to help manage energies in the room.

Crystal Gridding

This one is really fun to do – I often have my 6 year old help me with it! Take your set of crystals and find a space in your home with room for a small (about 6-12 inch diameter) grid that wont be disturbed by walking and playing. Decide which stone should be the centerpiece in your grid – I love quartz points or large amethyst clusters for this. Maybe just choose your largest stone, or look up the meanings of each and determine your focus for your grid. For example, if my focus is on clearing energy, my focal stone will be Selenite or Quartz. If it is on creativing or healing – amethyst. If on manifesting – jade. Then moving out, place more crystals in a pretty pattern all around the center stone. You really cannot do this wrong, so have fun with it! I love the ladies over at Energy Muse for ideas!

Alternately, I place one crystal in each corner of the room to ground the energy of the room and keep energy mellow and healthy. I’ve done this in my daughter’s bedroom to help with her night terrors – worked like a charm! I also really encourage this if your travel for long periods of time or travel for work where you have to be in a hotel room or work in a conference room – you can easily place a small stone in each corner of the room or even make a small grid in one corner. Just remember to pick the stones up and take them back with you

Ritual Baths

Bathing is a wonderful time to incorporate your crystals – I line the tub with them and even submerge them in the water. The only stones that do not come with me to the bath are the salt-based stones like Selenite and Himalayan salt Rocks. Mama Medicine MYC is a great resource for ritual bathing recipes using crystals and I just love her! The energy of the crystals will charge your bath water, making it more therapeutic for you. They will also help to set an energy of calm and peace so that you can fully enjoy your bath-time. One of my favorite ritual baths is one for the sacred feminine energy my body needs: Rose Quartz in the bath with Epsom and Sea salt, a tiny pinch of Spirulina, organic rose petals and 2 drops of Young Living Rose essential oil. Young Living has unsurpassed quality and their oils are so fragrant and pure – I just love them the best. Keep in mind that Rose is a pricey oil, so I will also use the YL blend Joy which contains rose, if not using the Rose eo.

Add to essential Oil rollers

You can purchase small crystals bits online or in stores and place them in your glass roller bottles before filling with essential and carrier oils. The crystals will charge your oil blend, aiding in whichever benefits your body needs! Plus, they look really pretty – and that definitely counts as a nice bonus!

How to Clean and Recharge your Crystals:

Opinions vary on this, but I still like to cleanse and charge my crystals at least once a week because they work so hard for me and our home. Crystals can act like sponges absorbing energy and then they can feel really “full” and in need to cleansing and a recharge. It is really easy to do this: cimply place them out in direct sunlight or moonlight for at least a few hours to overnight. You can alternately soak them in salt water for a few hours, if they cannot be outside or in a windowsill…but do not soak salt-based crystals like selenite (they will melt). A really great time to place your stones out overnight is during the full moon – the moon energy will help to cleanse and recharge the crystals in a powerful way. Remember, everything is made of energy and there are many energetic “waves” not visible to our human eyes.

I encourage you to look into using crystals in your home and in your self care practice! The best way to start is to order a rose quartz or jade gua sha stone (available here)  or jade roller (available here) and look up tutorials on You Tube to massage daily at home! I also love these ladies as a resource for crystals in the home!
